Islamic Restaurant was founded in 1914 by Indian-Muslim chef M. Adul Rahman. Today, the eatery is managed by third-generation owner Mr Khalil. Signatures such as tomato sweet pachady, chicken Mysore, and nasi biryani, created by his father and grandfather, are still served today. A unique dish here is roti Mariam (a cross between naan and prata), created by a woman who used to sell her homemade bread on a pushcart in the nearby Kampong Glam. The special recipe is influenced by Indian, Malay, and Peranakan cuisines, and the roti can be eaten with just a sprinkling of sugar, or with the tomato sweet pachady and curry.
